This year’s retreat in Haiti was our second year collaborating with Dance to Save Lives founder Dieufel Lamisere (aka Ferlo) and his amazing group of young people.  For the second year, Ferlo brought together an array of dancers to work with his students in Jacmel in what’s become a popular event for the young participants in his program.

Rhythm N Dance’s contribution for this dance retreat would be to bring Cassamance and it’s Kutiro culture to the people of Haiti and the city of Jacmel. Griot Percussionist Medoune Yacine Gueye (aka Papa Dame Gueye) would be the pillar of knowledge on the cultural traditions of Cassamance, the most southern region of West African nation Senegal.

RND founder and dance educator Kevin McEwen would teach workshops in Ekon Kon and Lengeng styles of dance that were accompanied by songs that connected the dancers with the cultural aspects of the dances! This would be the first time that

This is the first time that Kutiro dances and culture would be shared with the people of Haiti, so it’s an honor to she this culture with the people of Jacmel!

It was a great time had by all and we look forward to working with Ferlo and his program again in the future!
